New Britain Township

New Britain Township is a township in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The population was 10,698 at the 2000 census.

History

New Britain Township was founded in 1723 and celebrated its 275th birthday in 1998. The Township was comprised more than 15,000 acres and included land which is now occupied by Chalfont and New Britain borough as well as Doylestown Township. The Township currently encompasses 14.7 square miles (9900 acres).

New Britain Township borders Chalfont, New Britain Borough, Doylestown Township and Hilltown Township.

According to historical research conducted by Township volunteers, it is estimated that the Lenni Lenape Indians arrived in New Britain Township as early as 1397. The current U.S. Route 202 corridor was a main route for travelers as early as 1730. In 1778, George Washington's troops as said to have marched through the Township on their way to Monmouth, New Jersey from their camp at Valley Forge.

One of the primary features of New Britain Township, Lake Galena, is named after events of the 1880's. In 1838, local residents living near Neshaminy Creek began digging for lead, which occurs in this area as the mineral galena. As a result of their successful search, the "lead rush" of 1861 began. These lead mines in the heart of New Britain Township were eventually filled with concrete in the 1970's before being flooded to form Lake Galena, in the current Peace Valley Park.

North Branch Park

North Branch Park is located on Park Avenue, behind the municipal building.

West Branch Park

(1) Miracle playground system, (1) swing set 4 seated, (1) 4-way spring teeter-totter, (1) climb on fire truck, Playground system and fire truck rubberized mulch 6-8" deep, swings are wood mulch, (3) pee-wee baseball fields, (1) full sized Combo soccer/football field, t-walking trail with arched wooden bridge for wheel chair accessibility.

West Branch Park is located on Schoolhouse Road between the railroad tracks and Cedarhill Road.

Highlands Park

1500' x 6' wide walking trail, (1) playground system with 6-8" rubberized playground mulch, 1) set of swings 2 seated, (4) half court basketball courts (1) combination pee-wee baseball/mini soccer field.

This park is located on E Schoolhouse Road next to Chalfont Fire Co. West station

Pheasant Run Playground
(1) T-swing set 2 swings, (1) metal sliding board. Wood playground mulch 6-8" deep.

Playground is located on the corner of Pheasant Run Dr. and Seneca Dr.

Forest Park Playground
(1) Miracle playground system with 6-8" wood Playground mulch

Park is located at the end of Forest Park Dr. below cul-de-sac
